DESCRIPTION:This talk covers choosing and using nucleus hives. I discuss what to look for when purchasing poly nucs and how to prepare them for use. There are a myriad of uses for nucs and I cover the preparation of a nucleus colony\, moving (or not moving) it to another apiary\, circle splits and the importance of a balanced population of bees\, using nucs for swarm control\, queen mating and queen rearing\, feeding bees in nucs (and feeders)\, overwintering nucs and selling nucleus colonies.

SUMMARY:All Change - plans for comb management
DESCRIPTION:With EFB at Southowram\, the Association Apiary is obviously unfit for a visit.  This meeting was cancelled in May but has now been rescheduled to The Good Shepherd\, where there will be practical demonstrations without bees. \nThe current advice is that brood comb should be changed every 2-3 years to prevent disease build up within the colony. \nAt this meeting we will look at various methods of achieving this with practical demonstrations: \n\nannual piece- meal change\n50% change in a double brood\nBailey comb change\nShook swarm method\nusing nuclei to draw comb\n\nWe will also look at an alternative method of varroa estimation using a sugar roll.

DESCRIPTION:Cooking with Honey – Dianne Shepstone who works in the Dept of Food and Science at Leeds University. \nPlease see suggested recipes attached. There are a few test recipes\, a couple of easy cakes/biscuit recipes and a couple that are more challenging. \nIt would be great if  members bring their  own  attempts at the recipes to the meeting.  Please let us know in advance what you are bringing\, so everyone doesn’t bring the same thing!  It will also help Dianne to know which ones she needs to bring examples of.  Volunteers please contact secretary@hbks.org.uk \nIf you have a favourite honey recipe that you would like to bring along instead of one Diane’s recipes that would be excellent. \nPlease feel free to invite partners\, spouses or friends interested in cooking to this meeting.
