SUMMARY:YL Asian Hornet Update
DESCRIPTION:The number of sightings of the Yellow Legged Asian Hornet will doubtless continue to rise and will inevitably occur even closer to Calderdale and Kirklees. \nRecent genetic studies would also suggest that we now have an established population of YLAH in the UK. \nRichard Searle will be updating us on what we should be doing and when. \nA supply of Trappit will be available for distribution at the meeting

SUMMARY:Nosema with Mark McLoughlin
DESCRIPTION:Nosema is often called the “silent killer” because\, unlike mites or foulbrood\, it doesn’t always leave obvious clues. It’s a microsporidian (a type of fungus) that infects the gut of the bee\,  preventing them from absorbing nutrients.  We will discuss when to worry and what action you can take. \nMark McLoughlin is the Regional Bee Inspector for North West England and has a specific interest in Nosema.

SUMMARY:Working together to minimise risks of foulbrood
DESCRIPTION:As many members know\, we have had a significant outbreak of AFB and EFB in the Halifax and District area in 2025.\n This meeting will help us work together as individual beekeepers and collectively to reduce the risks and future spread.\n We will look at how to identify the foulbroods\, how to improve apiary hygiene and husbandry to reduce your risk. We will also demonstrate shookswarms for disease prevention and discuss swarm collection strategies to minimise risks.\n\nSpeaker  – Kay Phillips\, Seasonal Bee Inspector\, North West England team.

SUMMARY:David Evans (The Apiarist) - The Nucleus Option
DESCRIPTION:This talk covers choosing and using nucleus hives. I discuss what to look for when purchasing poly nucs and how to prepare them for use. There are a myriad of uses for nucs and I cover the preparation of a nucleus colony\, moving (or not moving) it to another apiary\, circle splits and the importance of a balanced population of bees\, using nucs for swarm control\, queen mating and queen rearing\, feeding bees in nucs (and feeders)\, overwintering nucs and selling nucleus colonies.

SUMMARY:Fermenting with Honey and Bee Keeping on Scilly Isles
DESCRIPTION:Josh  Jones – Fermenting with Honey \nLearn some key principles of home fermentation\, and ways to use honey to achieve unique flavours through ‘very slow cooking’. \nJohn Williams – Beekeeping on the Isles of Scilly \n\nThe Isles of Scilly\, is one of the few places in the UK that are thought to be free from Varroa. \nThe islands accommodate a small number of honey bee colonies which give low production and are aggressive probably due to “inbreeding” resulting from limited hive numbers on separated small islands. \nWe will look at the history and what projects they are undertaking to overcome these issues.

SUMMARY:All Change - plans for comb management
DESCRIPTION:With EFB at Southowram\, the Association Apiary is obviously unfit for a visit.  This meeting was cancelled in May but has now been rescheduled to The Good Shepherd\, where there will be practical demonstrations without bees. \nThe current advice is that brood comb should be changed every 2-3 years to prevent disease build up within the colony. \nAt this meeting we will look at various methods of achieving this with practical demonstrations: \n\nannual piece- meal change\n50% change in a double brood\nBailey comb change\nShook swarm method\nusing nuclei to draw comb\n\nWe will also look at an alternative method of varroa estimation using a sugar roll.

SUMMARY:Making better bees: stock improvement for the hobby beekeeper
DESCRIPTION:We all want better bees – be that better tempered\, more productive\, improved and frugal overwintering\, disease and pest resistant\, more long-lived queens. \nKarl Colyer has been keeping bees since 2003 and makes his living from the 80 colonies he runs from his base in Cheshire. Being a professional beekeeper having the best stock possible is of paramount importance. \nKarl takes a do it yourself approach to beekeeping\, building his own hives and other equipment from salvaged materials – see his many articles in BBKA News – so don’t expect him to be advocating spending cash buying in expensive queens. The bees you need will already be close to home\, most likely in your own apiary here in Calderdale. \nKarl will cover how he appraises his colonies\, and how you too can decide on which are your best queens. He will then outline simple methods\, well within the capabilities and budget of the average small-scale beekeeper or beekeeping group\, for raising the excellent queens you want\, based on his experience of producing well over 1800 queens in his beekeeping career.

SUMMARY:Cooking with Honey
DESCRIPTION:Cooking with Honey – Dianne Shepstone who works in the Dept of Food and Science at Leeds University. \nPlease see suggested recipes attached. There are a few test recipes\, a couple of easy cakes/biscuit recipes and a couple that are more challenging. \nIt would be great if  members bring their  own  attempts at the recipes to the meeting.  Please let us know in advance what you are bringing\, so everyone doesn’t bring the same thing!  It will also help Dianne to know which ones she needs to bring examples of.  Volunteers please contact secretary@hbks.org.uk \nIf you have a favourite honey recipe that you would like to bring along instead of one Diane’s recipes that would be excellent. \nPlease feel free to invite partners\, spouses or friends interested in cooking to this meeting. Please encourage them to bring along a recipe attempt as well!  And everyone should bring a good appetite! \nA further collection of Dianne’s recipes is on the BBKA website here \n*Note this meeting is on the first Wednesday of the month\, not the usual second one.*
